Where We Work
MABIA-Ghana works to improve access to quality sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services for women, girls, adolescents, and other underserved populations living in some of the most deprived and hard-to-reach communities in Northern Ghana, with a particular focus on the North East Region. As part of its commitment to reducing barriers to essential healthcare, MABIA-Ghana has trained midwives and other frontline health professionals who provide community-based counselling, health education, referrals, and reproductive health services. In selected districts of the Upper East Region, trained midwives provide cervical cancer screening and breast health screening services, helping to promote early detection, timely referral, and appropriate management of conditions that disproportionately affect women in underserved communities. MABIA-Ghana also implements Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC) and hotline/telemedicine services in all the districts of the North East Region. Through these interventions, trained midwives and other qualified healthcare providers provide confidential counselling, accurate information, appropriate referrals, and safe abortion-related care in accordance with applicable national guidelines and standards. The CAC services are available through district hospitals and selected health facilities at the sub-district level, bringing essential reproductive healthcare closer to women and girls who may otherwise face significant geographical, financial, social, or cultural barriers to accessing services. The hotline complements facility-based services by providing confidential counselling, information, referrals, and support to clients who may be unable or reluctant to visit a health facility directly. Through these integrated interventions, MABIA-Ghana seeks to strengthen the capacity of the health system, expand access to essential SRHR services, reduce preventable complications, address stigma and misinformation, and ensure that women and girls—particularly those living in underserved and marginalized communities—can access respectful, confidential, and quality reproductive healthcare. MABIA-Ghana works closely with relevant health authorities and health facilities to ensure that its community and facility-based interventions are implemented in coordination with the Ghana Health Service and in accordance with approved national policies, protocols, and standards.
What We Do
1. PUM Netherlands
Projects The Netherlands Senior Experts (PUM) is a volunteer organization that supports the sustainable growth of small and medium-sized enterprises and social impact organizations in developing countries and emerging markets by providing expert technical assistance and capacity-building services. MABIA-Ghana received technical support from PUM to establish its Cervical Cancer Prevention Project in the Upper East Region of Ghana. Through this partnership, PUM deployed an experienced gynaecologist who provided intensive training for midwives in cervical cancer screening, early detection, and cryotherapy for the treatment of precancerous cervical lesions. Following this technical assistance, MABIA-Ghana acquired a cryotherapy machine from the Hans Foundation, enabling the organization to provide quality cervical cancer prevention services to women in underserved communities. Today, the Cervical and Breast Cancer Prevention Project has become one of MABIA-Ghana's most successful and sustainable initiatives. It is currently the organization's only self-financing project, generating small revenue through affordable screening and treatment services while expanding access to life-saving cervical and Breast cancer prevention for women and girls in the Upper East Region. The project demonstrates MABIA-Ghana's commitment to developing sustainable health programmes that improve community health while reducing long-term dependence on donor funding. The Safe Abortion Action Fund (SAAF) supports local and grassroots organizations around the world to expand access to safe abortion services for vulnerable and marginalized populations. Through its financial and technical support, SAAF strengthens the capacity of community-based organizations to deliver high-quality, rights-based, and life-saving safe abortion information and services. MABIA-Ghana has been a proud partner of the Safe Abortion Action Fund since 2017, when SAAF first began supporting the organization's safe abortion programme in Northern Ghana. This long-standing partnership has enabled MABIA-Ghana to implement innovative, evidence-based interventions that have significantly improved access to safe abortion information and services, particularly for women and girls living in underserved communities. In recognition of the impact, innovation, and sustainability of MABIA-Ghana's work, SAAF has renewed its support by providing funding for a new project implementation period from July 2026 to June 2028. This continued investment will enable MABIA-Ghana to further expand access to comprehensive safe abortion care, strengthen community awareness, reduce stigma and misinformation, build the capacity of healthcare providers, and advocate for an enabling environment where women and girls can safely exercise their sexual and reproductive health rights. The MAMA Network (Mobilizing Activists around Medical Abortion) is a pan-African feminist movement that brings together grassroots organizations, community activists, healthcare providers, and advocates working to expand access to self-managed medical abortion (SMA) and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information across Sub-Saharan Africa. The network promotes women's autonomy, informed decision-making, and reproductive justice by ensuring that women and girls have access to accurate, evidence-based information, compassionate support, and, where permitted by law, quality medical abortion medicines and related reproductive health services. As an active member of the MAMA Network, MABIA-Ghana has significantly strengthened its institutional capacity through continuous engagement with the network. MABIA-Ghana has participated in numerous online trainings, mentorship programmes, and knowledge-sharing sessions on self-managed medical abortion, digital service delivery, advocacy, safeguarding, and rights-based approaches to sexual and reproductive health programming. In addition to technical capacity strengthening, MABIA-Ghana has received several sub-grants from the MAMA Network to design and implement innovative community-based projects aimed at expanding access to self-managed medical abortion information and services, increasing public awareness, strengthening referral systems, and improving reproductive health outcomes for women and girls in underserved communities in Northern Ghana. The hotline for MABIA-Ghana is 0800-22-33-44. The MAMA Network also supports MABIA-Ghana School Club activities in 15 Senior High Schools.

Cervical Cancer Screening and Cryotherapy Project
Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC) Project
Unsafe abortion contributes significantly to a high maternal mortality in Ghana, particularly in the three northern regions. Although the abortion law of Ghana is relatively liberal, safe abortion services are non-existent in some districts, knowledge of the abortion law is low and stigma is high. Through this project, MABIA-Ghana is working in four under-served districts of Northern Ghana in the Upper East, Upper West, and Northern regions. The project is aimed at increasing knowledge of legal rights to abortion among school students and introduces quality, non-judgemental, comprehensive abortion care (CAC) to women and young girls in public health facilities, at the same time ensuring that two midwifery training colleges are able to provide quality pre-service training on safe abortion to trainee midwives.
