Where We Work
MABIA-Ghana works in the most deprived communities in the three northern regions of Ghana. MABIA-Ghana has midwife volunteers in selected districts of the Upper East Region who were trained to advocate and provide cervical cancer education and screening services. These districts include the Bolgatanga municipality, Kassena-Nankana East district,Bawku West district, and the Talensi district. The Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC) Project is currently run in the Bulsa South district in the Upper East region,the Sissala East district in the Upper West region, the Chereponi and Gusheigu districts in the Northern Region.
What We Do
MABIA-Ghana works in every major area of reproductive health. We provide a wide array of sexual and reproductive health information, services, and products to vulnerable populations particularly poor women and young girls in underserved communities throughout the three northern regions of Ghana. We provide technical assistance and capacity building to local communities with the main aim of strengthening the health systems and making a difference in the lives of the people.
Cervical Cancer Screening and Cryotherapy Project
The Cervical Screening and Cryotherapy (CSC)Project is aimed at helping low-income women from under-served communities in the Northern and Upper East regions gain access to lifesaving breast and cervical screening and treatment services. .One of the most effective preventive strategies for cervical cancer is early detection through mass screening of the eligible population to identify precancerous cells before they can progress to actual cancers. In northern Ghana, there was only one facility in Tamale providing screening and Cryotherapy services and none existed in the Upper East region. In line with its vision, MABIA-Ghana began the CSC project to provide mass screening and Cryotherapy services for women in the Upper East Region. The Netherlands Senior Experts (PUM) provided technical support while the Millennium Villages Project (MVP) provided funding for the project.
Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC) Project
Unsafe abortion contributes significantly to a high maternal mortality in Ghana, particularly in the three northern regions. Although the abortion law of Ghana is relatively liberal, safe abortion services are non-existent in some districts, knowledge of the abortion law is low and stigma is high. Through this project, MABIA-Ghana is working in four under-served districts of Northern Ghana in the Upper East, Upper West, and Northern regions. The project is aimed at increasing knowledge of legal rights to abortion among school students and introduces quality, non-judgemental, comprehensive abortion care (CAC) to women and young girls in public health facilities, at the same time ensuring that two midwifery training colleges are able to provide quality pre-service training on safe abortion to trainee midwives.
